TIPS FOR THE PREVENTION OF HEADACHES

TIGHT PONYTAILS

A study at the City of London Migraine Clinic has found that a high percentage of women can suffer headaches as a result of pulling their hair tight in a ponytail. The hypothesis is that this can strain and irritate connective tissue in the scalp.

So maybe reconsider how you wear your hair or else make sure your ponytail is loose.

PEPPERMINT OIL

A University of Kiel study found that peppermint oil applied to the forehead helped to numb the pain of a headache.

USE A BOOK

Some osteopaths suggest this technique for headaches originating in the suboccipitals (the small muscles connecting the neck and the back of the head).

You lie on your back with your head on a book or telephone directory. Have the edge of the book positioned so that it lays on the occipital protuberance (the knobbly part on the back of the head) and make sure your chin is tucked in towards your chest. This can lengthen and stretch these muscles which frequently become tight and thus bring relief from headache.
