OXYTOCIN AND MENTAL WELLBEING

Oxytocin is a hormone and neuropeptide that has multiple functions in the body. It is most widely associated with childbirth and the follow-on stages. It is produced in the pituitary gland and stimulates contraction of the uterus during labour. Stimulation of the nipples can stimulate the release of oxytocin, and it plays a major role in bonding with the baby and milk production.

Oxytocin has a wider role, however, beyond this. It plays a broader role in sexual reproduction in both sexes. It is also associated with social bonding. I recently came across some current research which was focused on social bonding and the role of oxytocin in mental disorders. The author, Dr Sue Carter, a biologist and behavioural neurobiologist, writes: ” without loving relationships, human fail to flourish emotionally and physically, even if all of their other basic needs are met”.
