In the human body, the skeleton has five main functions:
SUPPORT FRAMEWORK: it literally stops us from flopping to the ground, supporting and anchoring the soft organs. The legs support the trunk when we stand, and the rib cage supports the thoracic wall.
PROTECTION: of soft organs eg brain, spinal cord, and the thoracic organs.
MOVEMENT: it is the interaction of muscles and bones that facilitates all bodily movements.
STORAGE: bones store calcium, and energy is stored as fat in the yellow bone marrow of long bones.
BLOOD CELL FORMATION (HAEMATOPOIESES): red bone marrow produces red & white blood cells
