World Menopause Day takes place on Friday 18 October 2019. This World Menopause Day, as with every year, will be marked by various organisations and various events all over the world.
The aim of World Menopause Day is to raise awareness and to obtain pledges of support for women facing health issues when approaching, during, and subsequent to the menopause.
The International Menopause Society in collaboration with the World Health Organisation inaugurated the first World Menopause Day in 1984. For a long time, it received shockingly little media coverage. While this has improved slightly, still many campaigners and medical professionals are still endeavouring to increase the profile of this day more, and events will be held all over the world from Cambodia to Peru.
Once upon a time, menopause was barely mentioned and, if so, was alluded to with vague terms such as ‘change of life’, as if it somehow should not be mentioned. This has improved in many countries in recent years, particularly those lucky enough to have more developed healthcare systems. However, there is still reluctance in all societies to engage with the issues surrounding menopause. One of the unfortunate side-effects of this is that a lot of the symptoms that may manifest as a side-effect of this normal biological process can go unaddressed. There are many health issues that can manifest at this time, which may cause considerable hardship for some women. Through events such as World Menopause Day, the aim is to raise awareness and to inspire dialogue so that those women who may need healthcare support are encouraged to come forward and seek it.
